What you need to know about these very good boys and girls

Full name: Saluki

Where do they originate? Part of the ‘Hound’ group of dogs, the Saluki breed dates back as far as 7000 b.c and originated in the Fertile Crescent region of the Middle East, where they were favoured by Arab Royalty for their hunting skills. The Saluki is the Royal Dog of Egypt, and The Kennel Club notes that the name is likely based on the Arabian city of Saluk or Syrian town Seleucia. A sight hound, that hunts on sight rather than scent or sound, the Saluki was often used to hunt gazelle and is considered one of the fastest breeds in the world.

Size: Adult Saluki dogs are considered medium-large(depending on where you look), and the PDSA says they can reach 58-71cm tall.

Average weight: Male: 45-65 lbs (approx.); Female: 35-45 lbs. (approx.)

Looks: These sleek, elegant and athletic dogs have oval eyes, long legs and body and a full chest. Their coat is two lengths -- short on most of the body and typically long and feathered over the ears and tail. As such, the longer hair requires regular (at least weekly, but ideally more) grooming to avoid matting.

Personality: Although Salukis were originally bred as hunting dogs, have a strong chase instinct and require a considerable amount of exercise, they are also considered gentle, loyal and shy. They are thought of as good family dogs as they are instinctively well-behaved with children and enjoy sitting quietly.

Exercise requirements: If you love the idea of adding a Saluki to your family, keep in mind that these energetic dogs require at least 2 hours of exercise a day!

Loves: Running, hunting (if you have trained it to, of course), sitting quietly and its own company!

Appetite and diet: As with all dogs, Salukis require good quality food suited to their age, but it’s worth noting that their appetites can be varied. However, if you feel your Saluki is not eating enough to be healthy, always consult a vet.

What health risks should you look out for? The PDSA says that the Saluki breed can be at risk from the following health conditions (though always consult a vet about any health concerns you may have):

Heart problems
Haemangiosarcoma
Hip dysplasia
Hypothyroidism

Lifespan: According to the American Kennel Club, Salukis are expected to reach between 10-17 years of age.

Are there any famous Salukis? Members of both the Abu Dhabi and Dubai Royal Families own Salukis. Outside of the UAE, celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, who works his magic on stars such as Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria also owns three Salukis. Movie star Orlando Bloom adopted a Saluki mix in the early 2000s, but the pooch sadly passed away in 2016.
